Botanical Gardens & Wood carving Factory, Kandy : Sri Lanka : Episode 5
This is Day 3 of the Sri Lanka Trip.
In the second half of the day, we continued our sight seeing, and we reached The Royal Botanical Gardens in Peradeniya, Kandy. Which is one of the most famous botanical gardens in Sri Lanka and a major tourist attraction.
The gardens are located about 5.5 kilometers west of the city of Kandy in the Central Province of Sri Lanka, near the Mahaweli River. They were formally established in 1843, though their history dates back to 1371 when King Wickramabahu III kept a court at Peradeniya.
During the British colonial period, the gardens were expanded and developed, with many plants being introduced from around the world. It covers a land of 147 acres and is an important center for botanical research and plant conservation in Sri Lanka. They have over 4,000 species of plants, including orchids, spices, medicinal plants, and palm trees.Visitors can take guided tours to learn about the diverse plant species and the history of the gardens.
The gardens are divided into several specialized sections, including the Orchid House, Palm Avenues, and the Great Lawn Below are some major attractions.- Orchid House showcases a stunning collection of orchids, with numerous rare and endemic species.
- Palm Avenues: There are several impressive avenues lined with various species of palm trees.
- Giant Javan Fig Tree: A massive tree with an extensive spread of branches, located near the center of the gardens.
- Cannonball Tree: Known for its large, fragrant flowers and cannonball-like fruits.
- Bamboo Collection: Includes giant bamboo from Burma, which can grow up to 40 meters tall.
After visiting the Botanical Garden we went to a Wood Carving Factory.
